Now that i've got my site up and running, i need to get it noticed. The first question I need to ask myself is "when do I want people to find me?". So, what terms will bring people to my site WHO WANT TO BE HERE.
So this means, I want my bounce rate to be 0 (in a perfect world). I want poeple to search for my site, find it and get some use out of it. For me, the target audence will be software developers and my target goal would be to get as many ppl to sign up to the feed as possible. Reason being, as a developer I value content and not frilly effects and I plan on producing content for like minded people. Most developers rely heavily on their RSS feeds to bring the information to them, instead of trawling.
Step 1. RSS + Indexing.
What I love about this step is that registering with feedburner increases your chances of getting noticed. It also adds a great, externally managed, service that provides you with meaningfull feed stats.
I installed the feedburner extension that I found, signed up for feedburner, added the code snippet to my front page. done.
Step 2. Google Web Master.
Using google webmaster is an absolute must, it allows you to control how google indexes your website. I'm not going to go into detail here as there's enough info out there on the web. Just registering alone and having a look at the dashboard will give you a good idea of what you can accomplish with it. It basically involves you registering your website by placing a code snipper/uploading a HTMl to verify you're the owner and then you have full control on how Google indexes your site. check it out here
Step 3. Register with some well known blog aggregators.
My website is tech orientated, so the best site to register with is Technocrati. Technocrati are the who's who of tech blogging. Getting registered and getting found from here will promote your site in the tech field. If you arent in the tech field, try searching for some blog aggregation sites related to you industry and register with a couple. This is the link i need to have for technocrati: Technorati Profile
step 4. SEO
Big bag of worms is this one, so i'll be brief. I did the minor stuff to start with, meta tags, post tags, tag relevency and link backs. I'll slowly start adding more levels of seo and documenting the process. I'm hoping on adding built in SEO functionality on top of the alerady built blogengine extensions.
Done.
Okay, ive done the most basic stuff and i'm pretty happy for my site to just sit out there be available to the world. I'll document it's rise in visibility as I improve on it's SEO.
